Mount Agung's eruption is expected to get worse
Mount Agung in Indoneia is now ready to erupt with lava expected to pour from the volcano at any moment, experts have warned.According to Daily Star UK, Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency
said 40,000 people had been ordered to leave the area near Bali’s
erupting Mount Agung volcano.
But tens of thousands still need to be moved as the island nation
prepares for an imminent eruption. It is estimated that many of the
100,000 are staying put until their farm animals have been safely
evacuated.
A spokesman said: “We really ask people in the danger zone to evacuate immediately because there’s a potential for a bigger eruption.
“Not all residents have evacuated yet. There are those who
haven’t left because their farm animals haven’t been evacuated yet.
There are those who feel they are safe.”
The government is now preparing to remove people by force. Activity
at Mt Agung in Indonesia began on Tuesday, with a small eruption.
This was followed by a much larger eruption on Saturday, which grounded all planes in the area.
Now experts have warned that Saturday’s eruption is growing and a
much bigger magmatic eruption could follow. A magmatic eruption could be
catastrophic for Bali, with lava pouring from Agung.
A statement from Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency
reported that the plume of ash and steam, coming from the mountain have
reached 11,150 ft.
It added: “This indicates the possibility that a larger eruption is imminent.”
The alert for people living in the surrounding areas has been
raised to the highest level. People living five miles or less from the
volcano were told to evacuate their homes immediately.
More than 140,000 people were told to evacuate the area around Agung in September, but no eruption took place.
The last time Agung suffered a magmatic eruption, it killed nearly 1,600 people.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and has more active volcanoes than anywhere else in the world.
